What is IP Rating?
The IP rating is the abbreviation of the Ingress Protection rating. It classifies LED lights based on their characteristics of dust protection, prevention of foreign object intrusion, waterproofing, and moisture resistance. It comes from the International Electrotechnical Commission's standard IEC 60529(https://www.iec.ch/ip-ratings), In this standard, the IP rating format for the protection of the electrical equipment housing against the intrusion of dust or liquids and use a two-digit number, for example IP65. The first digit indicates the protection level against solid objects, and the second digit indicates the waterproof protection level.
IP Rating code
For the LED light IP rating, there are seven levels for solid protection, denoted by numbers 0-6, and nine levels for liquid protection, denoted by numbers 0-8. For specific protection levels, refer to the below chart.
The First Digit
First digit |
Solids Protection Level |
0 |
No protection |
1 |
Prevent entry of objects larger than 50mm. Prevent accidental contact with internal parts of the luminaire by humans. |
2 |
Prevent entry of objects larger than 12mm. Prevent fingers from touching internal parts of the luminaire. |
3 |
Prevent full entry of objects larger than 2.5mm. Prevent tools, wires, or objects with a diameter greater than 2.5mm from entering. |
4 |
Prevent entry of objects larger than 1.0mm. Prevent mosquitoes, flies, insects, or objects with a diameter greater than 1.0mm from entering. |
5 |
Dust protection: This cannot completely prevent dust intrusion, but the amount of dust entering will not affect the normal operation of the luminaire. |
6 |
Dust tight: Completely prevent dust intrusion. |
The Second Digit
Second digit |
Liquid Protection Level |
0 |
No protection |
1 |
Protection against vertically falling drops, which have no harmful effect. |
2 |
Protection against dripping water when tilted at an angle up to 15°, with no harmful effects from limited drops. |
3 |
Protection against rain, with no harmful effects from water falling at a limited angle. |
4 |
Protection against splashing water, with no harmful effects from water splashing in any direction. |
5 |
Protection against water jets, with no harmful effects from water jets in any direction. |
6 |
Water-resistant, with no harmful effects from powerful water jets. |
7 |
Submersion protection, where the luminaire can be immersed in water for a specified pressure and time without harmful effects. |
8 |
Deep submersion protection, where the luminaire can be immersed in water for a specified pressure and time without harmful effects. |

Common IP Rating for LED lights
IP20 Protection Level
LED lights with an IP20 rating are suitable for indoor spaces that are dry, dust-free, and free from corrosive gases.
IP44 Protection Level
LED lights with an IP44 rating are suitable for indoor spaces with moisture and corrosive gases, as well as outdoor covered areas.
IP65 Protection Level
LED lights with an IP65 rating are suitable for common humid environments indoors and outdoors, such as open gardens, garages, etc.
IP66 Protection Level
The LED lights with IP66 rating has strong protective capabilities, can operate in harsh weather conditions, withstand powerful water jets and heavy dust, suitable for outdoor locations working in extreme environments, such as coastal areas or high mountain zones.
IP67 Protection Level
LED lights with IP67 rating can work normally under short-term water submersion and is suitable for places with high humidity and extremely high water vapor, such as swimming pools, steam rooms, etc.
IP68 Protection Level
LED lights with an IP68 rating can be used normally under long-term water submersion and prevent dust from entering extreme situations, such as the seabed and ships.
Conclusion
Making the waterproof LED lamps, need a multifaceted technical process involving material selection, sealing technology, protection ratings, installation and connection, as well as other auxiliary measures.
The IP rating of LED light has a significant impact on the selection and performance in different environments. Choosing LED light with the appropriate IP rating not only ensures their normal operation but also can increase their lifespan.
