Downlights are generally divided into recessed down lighting and surface-mounted down lighting.
Recessed downlights are usually installed in the ceiling, while surface-mounted downlights can be installed on the wall or suspended.
LED Downlights can provide uniform diffuse light and are suitable for basic lighting or auxiliary lighting.
Now, we are talking about the wattage of recessed downlights.
The wattage of recessed downlights should be determined according to the size of the space, purpose, and light requirements.
Common wattages of recessed downlights
The following are common downlight wattage ranges and application scenarios:
• 5W-7W: Suitable for small spaces or local lighting, such as entrances, corridors, bathrooms, etc. These areas do not require high light brightness, and 5W-7W downlights can provide soft light and create a warm atmosphere.
• 7W-12W: Suitable for medium-sized rooms, such as bedrooms, dining rooms, or small living rooms. This wattage downlight has moderate light and is suitable for daily use. It is energy-saving and can meet basic lighting needs.
• 15W-25W: Suitable for large spaces, such as large living rooms, open kitchens, or conference rooms. These downlights provide strong light and are suitable for spaces that require a bright environment.
• 30W-60W and above: mostly used in commercial places or large spaces, such as shopping malls, offices, or exhibition halls, high-wattage downlights can provide sufficient light to meet high brightness requirements.
It should be noted that modern recessed downlights have a high luminous efficiency (usually 100-120 lumens/watt), so compared with traditional fluorescent or halogen lamps, LED downlights can provide sufficient brightness at a lower wattage.
For example, the brightness of a 10W LED downlight is equivalent to that of a traditional 50W fluorescent lamp.
4 Factors affecting wattage selection
1. Space area
Generally calculated based on a luminous flux of 100-200 lumens per square meter. For example, a 10-square-meter bedroom requires a luminous flux of 1000-2000 lumens, and you can choose 1 10-20W LED downlight or 2-4 5-7W downlights.
2. Space height
Spaces with higher heights (such as more than 3 meters) require higher wattage downlights to ensure light coverage.
3. Functional requirements
If the reading area or work area requires higher brightness (such as 300-500 lux), you can choose 10W-15W downlights; for the rest area, you can choose 3W-7W low-wattage downlights.
4. Color temperature selection
Color temperature affects the light atmosphere.
Warm white light (2700K-3000K) is suitable for bedrooms to create a warm feeling;
Neutral white light (4000K-4500K) is suitable for living rooms or kitchens to appear bright;
Cold white light (5000K-6500K) is suitable for offices or commercial spaces.
Downlights with different color temperatures may have slightly different perceived brightness at the same wattage.
4 Practical suggestions for wattage selection
1. Even distribution: According to the size of the space, reasonably plan the number of downlights to avoid excessive or uneven light caused by a single high-wattage downlight. Generally, one 5W-7W downlight is installed every 2-3 square meters.2. Dimming function: Choose a LED downlight with a dimming function, which can adjust the brightness according to the scene, taking into account energy saving and flexibility.3. Energy saving first: LED downlights are preferred. Compared with traditional lamps, LED downlights are more energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan (usually 30,000-50,000 hours).4. Comprehensive lighting design: Downlights are often used for basic lighting. It is recommended to match them with pendant lights, wall lamps, or table lamps to meet the lighting needs of different scenes.
Summary
Too high wattage may cause glare, increased energy consumption or too bright a space;
Too low wattage may lead to insufficient brightness and dim space;
Both will affect comfort, so it is recommended to choose a moderate wattage according to the size and function of the space.In addition, once the wattage is determined, it may be necessary to determine the number of downlights. Please read how to calculate the number of downlights
